Canberra, New South Wales, Saturday June 5 1999, 10.10pm

A witness in Dunlop a northern suburb of Canberra observed a big bright oblong shaped red light with an apparent size of 8 to 10 millimetres at arm’s length from which a piece seemed to fall off and burn as it descended. The light was observed for 5 to 10 minutes, no sound was heard, and the object resembled a hot air balloon with the flame burning all the time. Conditions were fairly calm with very little cloud. The object was seen to the North West at an elevation of 30 degrees and it was not moving. It seemed to be 3000 feet up and it’s edges were not well defined.
